It’s more complex than the Laphroaig 10 with a much longer and enjoyable finish. With their near neighbor Laphroaig throwing off new NAS releases with unusual rapidity, Ardbeg seemed almost staid in comparison with the only variation coming from their annual one-offs. I was tempted at first to call An Oa a mellower expression of Ardbeg, but that’s not fully accurate. Recent bottlings of Ardbeg 10 is often referred to as “New” Ardbeg TEN as it’s made from distillate that was create after the company was purchased by Glenmorangie in 1997. Doesn't feel as intensely smokey as the Ardbeg 10 YO and has so much more going on. As such, Ardbeg decided to name this gentler, more approachable whisky after this protective peninsula. An Oa is a unique property drawn from Ardbeg’s new Gathering Vat – “especially created from fine French oak to bring Ardbeg An Oa into being.” Much like Glenfiddich’s Solera Cask, the Gathering Vat lets a variety of casks “mingle” in a large-scale environment. Hallmark Ardbeg peat, dark chocolate and aniseed are wrapped in smooth, silky butterscotch, black pepper and clove, before rising to an intense crescendo of flavour. So don’t get worried. Ardbeg 10 Year Old Bottling Note A phenomenal whisky packing powerful peaty deliciousness, Ardbeg 10 Year Old is a favourite of many whisky lovers around the world. Conversely Ardbeg 10 is my favorite entry level peated Scotch. So many flavors come through. My final point is I prefer Ardbeg 10 and Laphroaig 10 over the current version of Lagavulin 16 and it’s not close. Colour: gold.
